St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - Gunmen opened fire outside an apartment building for the disabled and senior citizens in St. Louis, hitting two bystanders including a disabled man.
It happened near Compton and Franklin in midtown, and the suspects got away.
The male victim in his mid-50s was just sitting on a bench outside of his apartment complex with two others when he was struck.
Tuesday night, he is still in the hospital and facing surgery.
They were outside enjoying the nice weather just feet from their home, the Metropolitan Village Apartments.
"All I know is that shots started coming, and and I just got up and started running, and fell down," says Ned Barnerd.
He and two others were sitting there when police say a truck with two men inside drove by with bullets flying from the vehicle.
Barnerd got away - his friend did not.
"There was actually so much blood I could not even tell where he was shot at," says property manager JoAnn Ahart.
The man in his mid-50's was struck by a bullet in his jaw.
Ahart says as she was telling her employees to hit the ground inside, she heard the resident outside screaming.
"He was out here yelling my name, and I thought, 'Oh my God, he's calling me,' but then I'm trying to wait until the shooting stops before I come out," she said. "I get outside and he's asking me is he going to be OK and we are like of course you are going to be OK."
The bullets sprayed the area including an office window of the complex.
Ahart said one of her employees did see a man running towards the building right before the shooting.
She said this is not the first drive-by in recent weeks and plans to go the the police department soon to see if something can be done.
"It was frightening, never been in nothing like that before in my life," Barnerd said.
The man is in stable condition and expected to recover.
A female in her 30's was also shot during the drive-by she is expected to be OK.
Police are looking for the suspects, if you know anything call Crimestoppers at 866-371-TIPS.
