Driver dies in crash after fleeing Granite City police, department says

Police said they stopped chasing the driver before the crash occurred. The driver's identity has not been released.

GRANITE CITY, Ill. — A person died in a single-car crash after fleeing from officers Thursday night, Granite City police said in a press release.

The incident started at about 8:05 p.m. when officers spotted a Dodge Ram pickup truck speeding down Illinois Highway 3. Officers attempted to pull the car over, but the driver continued to speed away.

The press release said officers saw the driver fleeing recklessly, so they called off the pursuit. Police said they lost sight of the truck, but it crashed on Niedringhaus Avenue near 16th Street.

The driver was pronounced dead by the Madison County Coroner's Office. His identity has not been released.

No other information about the crash was provided.
