EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — East St. Louis' former top official turned himself into police last week after he was charged with theft and official misconduct, according to Illinois State Police (ISP).
ISP, in an emailed press release on Wednesday afternoon, originally said former City Manager Carlos Mayfield, 60, was wanted on multiple public corruption crimes and officers were actively searching for him. The police agency later updated its statement, saying Mayfield turned himself in to police on Nov. 15.
According to court documents, he was released from custody later that same day.
The agency said it received an allegation relating to the crimes on April 3 and later found evidence that Mayfield knowingly used city funds for personal gain. Police issued an arrest warrant on Oct. 1 and served it to Mayfield's attorney, the agency said. Mayfield reportedly didn't turn himself into the police until Nov. 15, despite having weekly contact with his attorney.
Mayfield is facing felony charges of theft of government property and fraudulent use of a credit or debit card.
