WARREN COUNTY, Mo. — Nearly two days after escaping, an escaped prisoner was taken back into custody after he was found at a cemetery, Montgomery County officials told 5 On Your Side.
The prisoner escaped custody Sunday night at a rest stop in Warren County, Missouri, while being transported to a jail in North Carolina. A private transport was taking the prisoner from Dallas County, Nebraska, when it stopped at the Wright City Rest Area off Interstate 70, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said. While stopped, the prisoner escaped, jumped a fence and began running eastbound on Veterans Memorial Parkway.
The prisoner was taken into custody by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday after officials got a call about a suspicious subject walking near railroad tracks in Jonesburg, officials said.
"The Jonesburg Police Department along with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office responded to investigate," the sheriff's office said. "The male subject was located at the Jonesburg Cemetary. Law Enforcement on the scene confirmed it was the escaped prisoner and advised he was still wearing handcuffs on one arm. The prisoner was transported to the Warren County Jail."
MSHP troopers and Warren County sheriff's deputies and firefighters canvassed the area, the fire department deployed a drone and Wright City police used K-9s to help track down the prisoner.
