FERGUSON, Mo. — A person surrendered to police Thursday afternoon in Ferguson after they shot their sibling and barricaded themselves inside a home for more than two hours.
The incident began at about 11:30 a.m. at a home on Woodwind Drive near Vitadale Court, when a person called police about a disturbance. The dispatcher heard a conversation in the background indicating that someone had been shot and a gun was being loaded.
When officers arrived, a person experiencing a mental health crisis had barricaded themselves inside the home, Ferguson Police Chief Troy Doyle said in a statement. Police spent two hours communicating with the man before he surrendered without incident.
The person who was shot was taken to an area hospital for treatment; police did not give an update on their condition.
"Despite the danger and intensity of the situation, our officers acted with patience, professionalism, and compassion. For over two hours, they negotiated and used their Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) to peacefully de-escalate the situation. Thankfully, no one else was harmed, and the individual surrendered without further incident," Doyle said.
There was no remaining danger to the public, police said.
