ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — A man is facing numerous charges after he reportedly stole a vehicle and grazed a school bus during a police chase in St. Louis County on Tuesday, court records said.
County police were notified close to midnight Tuesday that a grey Ford Fusion fled from St. Louis City and University City police, the records said. Officers tracked the vehicle near the intersection of Airport and Florissant roads.
Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle reportedly fled the scene at a high rate of speed. The vehicle drove into oncoming traffic and entered a residential neighborhood when a firearm was thrown out of the front passenger window.
The Ford then sideswiped a school bus carrying 16 students, a teacher and a bus driver after it started traveling east on Interstate 70, police said. The vehicle became undrivable not long after and the driver and front passenger fled the scene on foot.
Detectives took the two into custody after a brief foot pursuit, according to court records. Two other passengers riding in the back seat were also taken into custody.
Police reportedly checked the VIN attached to the car and found the vehicle was reported stolen out of Madison County, Illinois.
The driver, identified as Florissant resident Vance Carter, is facing 20 charges, including 16 counts of endangering the welfare of a child. The court case is ongoing.
