ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — A former police officer was found guilty of domestic assault Tuesday after a bench trial in St. Louis County.

Ricardo George Williams, 41, was found guilty of third-degree domestic assault and violation of an order of protection in connection with a pair of incidents early last year.

According to a news release from the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell's office, Williams forced his way into a woman's Florissant home on Jan. 8, 2023, and grabbed her by the throat. The release said Williams and the victim were in a relationship at the time of the assault.

About two months later, Williams texted the victim despite knowing a full order of protection prohibited communication between the two, according to the release.

Williams was an officer with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department at the time of the incidents.

The case was prosecuted by the office's Conviction and Incident Review Unit, an independent unit that was created to prosecute police officers and other public servants. The unit was formed in 2018.

Third-degree domestic assault is a class E felony punishable by up to four years in prison. Violation of an order of protection is a class A misdemeanor that is punishable by up to a year in jail.

Sentencing was set for April 11.
