Investigation continues into the Hillsboro, Mo. Police Department

A report by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department outlines several allegations beyond the previous theft accusation, including mishandling of evidence.

HILLSBORO, Mo. - Hillsboro Police Chief Steve Hutt has resigned over allegations of theft.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department has been investigating criminal behavior and other issues within the Hillsboro police department at the request of the Hillsboro Board of Alderpersons.

Their report outlines several allegations beyond the previous theft accusation. Those other allegations included mishandling of evidence.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department was assigned to oversee the department during the investigation. A lieutenant with the sheriff's department will oversee the officers until a permanent solution can be created.

The report said:

"Without immediate and decisive intervention, victims cannot get justice in the City of Hillsboro. For the safety of the entire county, the Hillsboro Police Department needs a massive and costly turnaround, or they need to consolidate with the Sheriff's Office."
