SAINT ELMO, Ill. — An Illinois police officer shot and injured a man they said fled a reported burglary and led police on a chase on Dec. 30.

According to an Illinois State Police press release, the man was shot by an officer after his car was immobilized on the 2400 block of 2150 Street in Saint Elmo, Illinois. The release said the man, 36-year-old Tyler Roe, was treated at the hospital and released into police custody.

The release said the incident started with a call for a reported burglary in progress with shots fired at the 1600 block of North 1550th Street in Brownstown, Illinois, on Dec. 30, 2023. While responding to the call, officers saw Roe fleeing the scene in a vehicle he stole from the victim's home.

The release said the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department spotted the car and started chasing it. Officers with the Farina Police Department joined the chase and used a precision immobilization technique, or PIT, maneuver to stop the car.

While approaching the stopped car, one of the Farina officers fired a shot into the car, injuring Roe. The press release did not say if Roe was armed or what, if anything, he did while officers were approaching the car. An Illinois State Police spokeswoman said no other information could be provided because it is an ongoing investigation.

Roe was treated at the hospital before being released into police custody. No police officers were injured in the incident.
