House Springs man dies in Jefferson County Jail

The man was booked just hours earlier for allegedly driving while intoxicated.

HILLSBORO, Mo. — Patrick D. Watz, 39, of House Springs died at the Jefferson County Jail in Hillsboro on Monday, Sheriff Dave Marshak announced in a written statement.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the death, the statement said.

“Sheriff’s Office detectives are reviewing evidence and conducting interviews with witnesses to learn more about the circumstances leading up to Mr. Watz’s death,” Marshak said. “Right now, there is nothing to indicate anyone else was involved.”

Corrections officers and a nurse were alerted just before midnight on Oct. 13 that Watz was unresponsive in the dorm area. The jail staff performed CPR and other lifesaving measures, but those attempts were unsuccessful, the report said.

Valle Ambulance District personnel pronounced Watz dead just after midnight on Monday, spokesperson Grant Bissell said.

Watz was booked into jail just after noon on Sunday on a charge for allegedly driving while intoxicated, the Sheriff’s Office reported.
