Man dies after shooting at Maryland Heights gas station

St. Louis resident Jaymes AJ Mays, 25, faces first-degree murder charges for the Sunday night Maryland Heights fatal shooting of 37-year-old Jerome Gooden.

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. — A suspect is in custody after a fatal shooting Sunday evening at a busy gas station in Maryland Heights.

The suspect, 25-year-old Jaymes AJ Mays of St. Louis, was named Monday morning in a statement from the Maryland Heights Police Department.

Mays is being held without bond at the St. Louis County Justice Center. He faces first-degree murder and armed criminal action charges.

The police department said officers responded at about 6:15 p.m. to calls for a shooting at Circle K near the intersection of McKelvey and Dorsett roads.

Officers arrived to find a 37-year-old man lying on the parking lot with gunshot wounds. The victim was St. Louis resident Jerome Gooden, according to the Monday morning police statement.

Bystander video shared with 5 On Your Side showed first responders performing CPR on a man before he was taken by ambulance to an area hospital. He was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.

Mays was taken into custody at the scene and a handgun was recovered.

Police were still actively questioning witnesses as of 7:30 p.m., and the gas station remained surrounded by police tape.

This shooting comes just weeks after a shooting about 2 miles away at a Comfort Inn left a 20-year-old paralyzed. The gas station is also right next to the Dobbs Tire and Auto Center where a man shot and killed his coworker in 2023.
