Long time St. Louisans, business owners and tourists react to deadly downtown mass shooting

"The crime has always hurt my business and our community. My family and I pray something better will happen," said Andre Tunstall, a downtown business owner.

ST. LOUIS — From long-time St. Louisans, to downtown business owners to tourists, they're all sounding off about a mass shooting in the heart of downtown St. Louis.

Police say it happened around 2:30 Sunday morning near 10th and Market Street, just down the street from the Gateway Arch, several courthouses and the popular City Garden.

"it's just a shame that it keeps going on the way it goes on," said St. Louisan James Taylor.

"When you go to Chicago and other cities, you just don't see this constant violence," said Andre Tunstall, who has run a clothing store downtown for the past six years.

As of Monday evening, no arrests had been made as and police had not released the name of the man in his mid 20s who was shot and killed.

Five others, ranging from 18 years old to their mid 20s, were wounded.

"I am a little shocked, but sadly this is the kind of world that we live in now," said Sue Ann Conway, who was visiting St. Louis from Indiana with her husband.

Investigators said fights first broke out with women. Men got involved, the violence escalated and gunshots rang out.

Police arrested a woman who they say assaulted an officer.

They also found a gun at the shooting scene.

Monday, children played in fountains at City Garden as police officers on bikes and security guards patrolled the grounds.

"This is like an area for kids to play in, so to me that shooting shouldn't have never happened," added Sue Ann Conway.

According to police, so far this year, there have been nine homicides in the Downtown and Downtown West neighborhoods.

Lots of people tell 5 On Your Side they just want peace in the city and for the violence to stop.

"The crime has always hurt my business. Our sales have dropped because of it. People are scared and they don't want to come downtown and shop. My family and I are just praying something better will  happen," added Andre Tunstall.

"I've lived here all my life, for more than 50 years, and I've never seen our city this bad," said another woman who wanted to remain anonymous.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the mass shooting to call the St. Louis Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-371-TIPS.
