ST. LOUIS — Police on Tuesday announced charges against a man who they said shot and killed a St. Charles woman last month inside a St. Louis home.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office charged Mario Lee, 46, with one count each of second-degree murder, armed criminal action and second-degree burglary in connection with the death of Candace Horskins.

Horskins, 34, was killed on Dec. 21 on the 5800 block of Kennerly Avenue in the Wells-Goodfellow neighborhood.

According to a probable cause statement, a woman came home that night to find that Lee, whom she knows well, and Horskins had entered her home without permission.

The woman told police she heard a gunshot from upstairs before Lee came downstairs and told her Horskins was dead. Lee then left her home. Police said doorbell camera footage corroborated the story.

Officers arrived to find Horskins with a gunshot wound to her head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Horskins had heroin and cocaine base with her when she was found.

Lee was being held at the St. Louis City Justice Center without bond. His next detention hearing was set for Jan. 9.
