Man charged after fight with neighbor in Wentzville leads to deadly shooting

The suspect told police the victim had been bothering him for more than a year, and he said he feared for his life multiple times.

WENTZVILLE, Mo. — A man is facing first-degree murder and multiple other charges after police said he shot and killed his neighbor Friday night.

Craig Jackson was charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action and endangering the welfare of a child in the Oct. 20 deadly shooting.

According to the probable cause statement, Jackson was lying next to the victim when police arrived at about 7:50 and told officers he shot the victim in self-defense. The victim was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The victim, who lived across the hall from Jackson in an apartment on the 1100 block of Evergreen Court, accused his girlfriend of having sex with Jackson and Jackson's girlfriend. During that argument, the shooting victim punched Jackson in the face, leaving Jackson with a swollen lip, police wrote in the probable cause statement.

Jackson told police he pulled out his gun and shot the victim twice while they were on the shared patio outside the apartment building. The victim's girlfriend told police the victim was holding his 2-year-old child when he was shot. Jackson told officers the child was on the patio at the time of the shooting, but did not say the victim was holding the child.

Jackson told police the victim had been bothering him for more than a year, and he said he feared for his life multiple times.

Jackson was charged Saturday. He pleaded not guilty in an initial court hearing. His bond was set at $250,000.
