Burglaries have 'plummeted' in south St. Louis district since arrest of man facing hundreds of theft charges, police say

Police said garage and storage unit burglaries have "plummeted" in the South Patrol Division's Second District since Gage Luttman's arrest.

ST. LOUIS — A month after a Jefferson County man was charged in a string of St. Louis burglaries, he now faces hundreds of additional related counts for thefts across a wide swath of the city's south side.

Gage Luttman, 36, was charged with three burglaries earlier this year. St. Louis police said he was the main suspect in 25 others.

Prosecutors on Friday filed 252 more charges against Luttman, including property damage, burglary, stealing and tampering with vehicles.

Luttman was accused of breaking into businesses, garages and basements, and cutting the locks on hundreds of storage units over seven months. He used stolen vehicles to commit many of the crimes, police said.

All of the charges filed Friday stem from burglaries in south St. Louis, with the majority of thefts targeting Devon Self Storage at 3181 South Kingshighway Blvd., Life Storage at 6557 Manchester Ave., Metro Storage Express at 2729 Hereford St. and Public Storage at 2321 McCausland Ave.

Stolen items included tools, lawn equipment, electronics, jewelry, guns and vehicles.

On April 2, police executed a search warrant at a home on the 2700 block of Hermitage Avenue, where they arrested Luttman and two others, and recovered stolen items worth thousands of dollars. Police posted photos of more than 100 of the items in the hopes that the owners would recognize their belongings.

"Since his arrest and confinement, storage unit and garage burglaries have plummeted in the Second District," police said in a probable cause statement.

He also has pending cases against him out of St. Louis County and St. Charles County, police said.

Luttman was booked April 2 at the St. Louis City Justice Center, where he remained without bond as of Friday.
