ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — A Metro East man was charged Thursday with murder in connection with a deadly shooting at a north St. Louis County gas station earlier this week.

Unice Hobby IV, a 25-year-old Belleville man, was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the deadly shooting of 20-year-old Dennis Cooperwood on Monday.

According to the St. Louis County Police Department, officers with the Central County Precinct responded at about 3:20 p.m. to a shooting at the Circle K at 5215 Lucas and Hunt Road in Norwood Court. There, a man suffering life-threatening gunshot wounds was found in the parking lot.

In a probable cause statement, police said Hobby and Cooperwood were seen getting out of the same car at the gas station before Hobby opened fire on Cooperwood.

Police said Cooperwood was taken to an area hospital, where he later died.

Police said they were able to identify the license plates of the car using surveillance footage and tracked the plates to a car that Hobby owned.

The prosecuting attorney's office issued at-large warrants against Hobby. Police said Hobby is in jail outside of St. Louis County after being arrested in Illinois on July 24. He is being held without bond.
