ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office charged a man Wednesday in connection with a Tuesday evening shooting that left a youth football coach fighting for his life.
Daryl Clemmons, a 43-year-old St. Louis man, was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action for allegedly shooting Shaquille O'Shea Latimore, a volunteer football coach in Sherman Park.

Police said shortly after 7 Tuesday night, the 30-year-old Latimore and Clemmons got into an argument when Clemmons shot the coach near the football field in front of players and parents. A source said there were several dozen young boys practicing at the park with their coaches at the time of the shooting.
Police said after the crime, Clemmons walked inside their North Patrol Division station and turned himself in.
Latimore was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. Police said he had stable vital signs after undergoing surgery.
The shooting happened just down the street from Alderwoman Sharon Tyus' home and in the 12th Ward.
"I'm sorry that happened to the coach. We are very fortunate that we have people like him who volunteer with the City Rec Program because there are a lot of young men who don't have role models," Tyus said.
Community leaders said Latimore has been a popular, football coach and role model for kids for many years.
A spokesman for the mayor's office said for the past two years, Latimore has volunteered with the "City Rec Legends Football Practice."
"I just hope he pulls through because the kids need him," said Dorian Artis, a parent who helped Latimore after the shooting.
Clemmons is in police custody. Bond information was not available in online court documents.
