Man found guilty of shooting and killing woman who sideswiped him in north St. Louis

Douglas Shelton-Herron, 27, was found guilty of second-degree murder in the 2022 shooting that killed Lekeisha Stokes.

ST. LOUIS — A man was found guilty Thursday over a 2022 murder in the Baden neighborhood of north St. Louis city.

Douglas Shelton-Herron, 27, was found guilty of second-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Prosecutors said on Feb. 11, 2022 he shot and killed Lekeisha Stokes, 39, on the 8500 block of Church Road.

Court documents said on that night, Shelton-Herron and four friends were smoking marijuana in his Jaguar parked in front of a home on Church Road.

The documents said Stokes dropped off a friend and was returning home from a karaoke event, and when driving through an intersection, she weaved before sideswiping Shelton-Herron's car and crashed into a car parked in front of the Jaguar.

Prosecutors said Shelton-Herron jumped out of his car and fired 12 shots at Stokes' car with an assault weapon. They also said two other companions fired shots with handguns while running away.

Police said a witness who was a passenger in Shelton-Herron's car heard Stokes yell "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Don't shoot!" after hitting the Jaguar.

“A group of high, trigger-happy young men brought an innocent woman’s life to a senseless end,” said Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore. “It is a mistake they will have many years to reckon with behind bars."

Shelton-Herron's sentencing hearing is scheduled for Nov. 20.
