ST. LOUIS — A man was taken into custody Thursday after St. Louis police said he shot at officers while trying to evade arrest.

In a press conference Thursday afternoon, Major Donnell Moore said no one was injured and the man was taken into custody in the area of Amherst Place and Julian Avenue.

Moore said someone called police after a ex-tenant, a man in his 40s, showed up and started "causing a disturbance." The person called again to tell police the man was armed.

Moore said when officers arrived on the scene, they told the man to put down the gun, but the man ran off. When police chased after him, the man fired one shot, according to Moore.

A second group of officers arrived on the scene a short time later and were able to chase the man back to the original officers, who took him into custody, Moore said. No officers fired shots during the incident.

Moore said the man did not have the gun on him while police were taking him into custody, but they were able to find the gun while searching the area.

A police department spokesman said the man, who has not been identified as of Thursday afternoon, was a convicted felon.
