Man sentenced in fatal Collinsville stabbing

COLLINSVILLE, Ill. — A Belleville man was sentenced to prison for the stabbing death of a man who was found dead in a ditch near his home in November 2023.

Carlos Mosley, 24, will serve 25 years in prison. He pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.

Tyrese L. Owens, 21, was found in a ditch near his home. Collinsville police and the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis investigated his death.

The investigation found that Mosley and another man tracked Owens to his home with a cell phone. They slashed a tire on his truck, and Owens came out of his apartment. Owens was attacked with a knife. He died at the scene.

Mosley and the other man, Amari McGee, 22, fled to Belleville where police caught up with him. Mosley jumped off an apartment deck in an attempt to escape.

Carlos Mosley was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 21-year-old Tyrese Owens.

McGee is also charged with first-degree murder in the case.

"We continue to pray for Tyrese Owens and his grieving family, and hope this first-degree murder conviction brings them some measure of closure and justice,” Madison County State's Attorney Tom Haine said in a news release. "We are grateful to the Collinsville Police, the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis, and all the law enforcement officers who helped bring Mr. Mosley to justice.”
