ST. LOUIS — A man was shot in the chest Thursday morning at a Metro Transit location in north St. Louis, police said.
Police said the man was found in the parking lot of the Riverview Transit Center Thursday morning. A 56-year-old man was shot multiple times in the chest.
The man was conscious and breathing when officers arrived on the scene and taken to the hospital in critical condition.
St. Louis police believe technology that's part of a partnership between police and Metro will help them catch the suspect.
While no arrests have been made, St. Louis Police spokesperson Mitch McCoy said a camera on a Metro bus captured some of the shooting.
"If a crime happens on Metrolink property, the likelihood that it's captured on camera is high; when that happens, we're going to use that to our advantage in our investigation and ultimately arrest someone and bring them to justice. It's the technology that we're leveraging every day to bring people who want to commit crimes off the streets, and that's what's going to happen here," McCoy said.
William Riley hasn't ridden the Metrobus in four years. Thursday was his first time back at the Riverview Transit Center. While he said knowing about the camera technology makes him feel safer, he'd like to see them add more of a security presence at the bus locations.
"I see a lot of crazy stuff going on around here. I wish they would step up more security at these stops, I really do. Because just having one person, that is not working," Riley said.
Riley said the recent shootings and crimes happening at other nearby Metro locations need to stop.
"That's so unsafe. But if they don't have enough security, what can they do? Because you do have security that's scared of what's going on in the streets," Riley said.
Video from the scene showed multiple evidence markers in a parking lot near the Riverview Transit Center. While officers investigated, crime scene tape blocked the parking lot, but not the pavilion and bus loop.
St. Louis police initially told 5 On Your Side that the shooting happened on Metro property but now say they believe the man was shot near the transit center, then stumbled onto the parking lot and collapsed.
