ST. FRANCOIS COUNTY, Mo. — A St. Francois County deputy shot and killed a man during a police pursuit Wednesday afternoon.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol, which is investigating the shooting at the request of the St. Francois County Sheriff's Office, said a deputy with the sheriff's office tried to pull the suspect over at 2:19 p.m. near Old Orchard Road.

The suspect kept driving and a pursuit began. A press release from the St. Francois County Sheriff's Office said the car eventually stopped on an on-ramp to Highway 67 at Old Orchard Road.

When the deputy got out and started walking toward the car, the diver put the car in reverse and backed into the police car, according to the sheriff's department press release. The driver ignored the deputy's commands and backed the car into the police car again, and when he went to do it a third time, the deputy opened fire and shot the driver, the press release said.

Officers at the scene provided first aid until medical personnel responded and took the suspect to an area hospital. He later died at the hospital. He was identified Friday as 58-year-old Timothy J. King of Moscow Mills.

No one else was injured in the incident.

The highway patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control is heading the investigation and will forward its findings to St. Francois County prosecutors for review.
