TROY, Ill. — A Troy, Illinois, man was sentenced to 50 years in prison after intentionally setting a fire that killed a 69-year-old woman in 2022.
Michael Sloan Jr. pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in January in connection with the Sept. 22, 2022, fire that left Susanne Tomlinson dead. He was sentenced to 50 years, Madison County State's Attorney Tom Haine announced.
He would be 91 years old before being eligible for parole, a press release said.
“This sentence, which is effectively a life sentence, brings accountability for the heinous and cruel actions committed by the defendant against an innocent life,” Haine said. “This sentence reflects the gravity of the crime, the impact it had on the victim’s family, and the unwavering commitment of the State’s Attorney’s Office to protect the innocent. Our prayer is that this sentence helps the victim’s family navigate the difficult path of healing after their profound loss.”
According to Tomlinson's daughter, Courtney Tomlinson, she and Sloan got into an argument at her home in the 500 block of Wood Thrush Street. He attacked and threw gasoline on Courtney, but she escaped and sought help.
Sloan then went to Tomlinson's house and dumped gasoline onto her, the release said.
Prosecutors said when police arrived, they saw Sloan hold a cigarette lighter above his head and flick the lighter, resulting in a fireball.
Susanne Tomlinson died of smoke inhalation and burn injuries, the release said. Her dog, Sydney, also died.
Sloan was rescued from the fire and taken into custody after receiving medical treatment at a hospital.
