MORGAN COUNTY, Mo. – A Morgan County deputy was shot Thanksgiving morning while trying to arrest a man wanted for assault.
Sgt. Erik Eidson with the Missouri State Highway Patrol says officers with the Versailles Police Department were called to a building in the 18000 block of Second Street in Versailles, Mo. for a report of an assault in progress.
Eidson says when officers arrived they confronted 41-year-old Randall Roden and attempted to take him into custody. Roden was tasered twice by officers trying to arrest him, he says.
According to Eidson, Roden was armed with a gun and fired several shots at police, striking one of the deputies.
Police returned fire, killing Roden. Eidson says an autopsy is underway.
No other information has been released.
Versailles is approximately 170 miles west of St. Louis.
