ST. LOUIS — On Monday afternoon a 5 On Your Side crew heard chimes blowing in the wind when they went to Ashland Avenue near Union Boulevard in north St. Louis.
However, last Wednesday neighbors recall a much different scenario.
"I did hear gunshots and they sounded extremely close," said neighbor Madison Dyson.
Gunfire rang out outside Dyson's bedroom window.
Police say just down the street, a DoorDash driver was making a delivery when he accidentally backed into a man's car.
Investigators say the suspect hopped out of his car and then shot the 20-year-old door dash driver in his chest.
"Police came, knocked on the door and asked for any video camera footage. We didn't have any," said Madison Dyson.
Sunday night police went back to the same neighborhood.
This time they descended on the 5200 block of Ashland Avenue after someone shot a 15-year-old boy in his back.
The teen and DoorDash driver were both taken to area hospitals.
The boy was the second teen shot in the city so far this year.
"It's traumatic and I really hope they recover," said Madison Dyson.
People who live on Ashland say crime is rare on their street.
"I've never heard of anything like that. I mean we hear gunshots, but normally it's further off in the distance," added Dyson.
"That is very disheartening," said neighbor Sharon Atlas.
Neighbors say they hope St. Louis' new Police Chief Robert Tracy can help curb the violence.
Sharon Atlas wants more town hall meetings.
"The new police chief has to be able to do those meetings where people can actually come out and then he needs to really come out and see these areas for himself," said Atlas.
On this Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, Public Safety Director of the Metropolitan Urban League of St. Louis James Clark is once again pleading to clergy members, law enforcement and other community leaders to unite and tackle the ongoing gun violence in St. Louis.
Clark said it's violence that has spilled into the new year.
"We cannot walk into spring and summer of 2023 without a holistic plan that includes scaled-up neighborhood engagement," Clark said. "We have the tools and now we must reach families on their porches, help teens before they turn to violence and stop this violence. We can do this. It's going to take all of us working together. Dr. King did all he could and now we need a new movement against crime."
Back in the Ashland neighborhood?
"I'm hoping I hear more kids playing outside than gunshots," Dyson said.
Police say they arrested a 27-year-old suspect in the shooting of the DoorDash driver.
As of tonight, they're still looking for the person who shot the 15-year-old boy.
They have not released any more information about the shooting of the teen.
