Meetup to smoke marijuana behind high school ends in shooting in St. Louis County

A man and a woman met up behind the school to smoke marijuana, and the man fired shots after she denied his sexual advances.

WELLSTON, Mo. — A meetup to smoke marijuana behind Normandy High School took a violent turn last Friday.

According to the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, 37-year-old Steven Brown of Pine Lawn met up with a woman to smoke together at about midnight on Dec. 8 at the high school on St. Charles Rock Road in Wellston. A fight ensued after Brown made unwanted sexual advances toward the woman.

Charging documents say Brown pulled out a pistol. He fired a shot in the air before aiming the weapon near the woman's legs and firing again. They ended up leaving in separate vehicles.

While driving away, the woman began to feel pain in her leg, and she drove to an area hospital, where she was treated for a graze wound from bullet shrapnel, according to charging documents.

Considered a dangerous felon due to having 10 or more prior felony convictions, Brown was being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond and charged with the following counts in connection to the incident at Normandy High School:

  • Unlawful use of a firearm - exhibiting (Class E felony).
  • Unlawful use of a firearm - dangerous felon (Class C felony).
  • Second-degree assault (Class D felony).
  • Armed criminal action (unclassified felony).

For the charges, Brown faces up to a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine for the Class C felony; a year in jail, seven years in prison and a fine of $10,000 for the Class D felony; one year in jail, four years in prison and a fine of $1,000 for the Class E felony; and life in prison, served consecutively, for armed criminal action.
