CAHOKIA HEIGHTS, Ill — Police are working to identify the driver of a silver BMW who walked away after fatally striking a man and woman Sunday evening in Cahokia Heights.
Sgt. Chris McGinnis of Cahokia Heights Police Department said the crash happened at about 7:20 p.m. Sunday on Illinois 15 near Pocket Road.
The man and woman were carrying bags from a nearby convenience store and crossing the highway when the BMW struck them. The driver then got out of the BMW and walked away from the scene.
The man, 55, died at the scene. The woman, believed to be around 50 years old, died at a St. Louis hospital.
Police were not releasing the man's name pending notification of family. They were still trying to confirm the woman's identity.
The BMW's plates were still registered to the previous owner, who had sold the car but had yet to finish transferring the title. McGinnis said the previous owner was cooperating with police and trying to find information about the person who bought the vehicle.
McGinnis emphasized that since the pair was crossing the road illegally, there would not have been a crime if the driver had stayed; it is now a crime because the driver left the scene.
