Person of interest in Wash Ave. homicide killed in officer-involved shooting

St. Louis Metropolitan Police confirmed that a person of interest in the Washington Avenue homicide of Brandi Hill was killed in an officer-involved shooting Thursday afternoon in Washington Park, Illinois.

St. Louis Metropolitan Police confirmed that a person of interest in the Washington Avenue homicide of Brandi Hill was killed in an officer-involved shooting Thursday afternoon in Washington Park, Illinois.

Illinois State Police said it all started at 1 p.m. near the intersection of North 50th Street and Audubon in Washington Park. U.S. Marshals spotted the man, 21-year-old Devonte Gates, and began chasing after him. At some point during the chase, Gates was shot by U.S. Marshals and a Caseyville, Illinois, police officer. He was declared dead on the scene.

U.S. Marshals were looking for Gates in connection to two homicides, the fatal Washington Avenue carjacking and another on Ridge Avenue in East St. Louis.

There have been no reports of injured officers.
