Poplar Bluff police officer shot by suspect in standoff

Police said the US Marshals Service was trying to arrest James Odell Johnson Jr. on an active warrant. As they entered the apartment, Johnson shot Detective Corey Mitchell and hit a US Marshal in the body armor.

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. — A detective was shot by a suspect in a standoff in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, Thursday afternoon, but is expected to be OK.

Police said the US Marshals Service was trying to arrest James Odell Johnson Jr. on an active warrant. Officers knocked on the door and took a woman out of the apartment. As they entered the apartment, Johnson shot Detective Corey Mitchell and hit a US Marshal in the body armor.

Johnson then holed up in the bedroom with another woman. Police set up a perimeter and were able to convince Johnson to surrender without further incident.

Mitchel was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for an injury that was not life-threatening.

The Missouri Highway Patrol is investigating.
