FARMINGTON, Mo. (AP) - A preliminary hearing has been set for Sept. 23 for a man accused of killing his southeast Missouri cellmate.

The Daily Journal newspaper in Park Hills, Missouri reports that 34-year-old Edward Barnes is charged with second-degree murder in the March 27 death of Jimmy Cox. The men shared a cell at the Farmington Correctional Center.

Court records say that during a cell check, a corrections officer found Cox face-down with his cellmate on top of him, choking him.

Barnes has previous convictions for assault, endangering a corrections officer, property damage, tampering and resisting arrest.

A message seeking comment from Barnes' attorney was not immediately returned.
