Police officer shoots at armed man while trying to make arrest, Sauget police say

All of the shots fired by the officer missed the man. The man then surrendered to police, and officers recovered the man's weapon.

SAUGET, Ill. — Police in Sauget, Illinois, said officers fired at a man suspected of trying to pull someone out of their car early Friday morning.

According to a spokesperson for the Sauget Police Department, the incident started when the man tried to pull someone out of their car at a BP gas station on Mississippi Avenue in Sauget sometime before 4 a.m.

Police said the man reportedly fired a shot during the incident, so when police arrived on the scene, they ordered the man to drop his weapon. The spokesman said when the man did not follow the officer's instructions, the officer fired multiple shots at the man.

All of the shots fired by the officer missed the man. The man then surrendered to police, and officers recovered the man's weapon.

Video from the scene showed a red sedan with a bullethole in the rear windshield and multiple evidence markers on the parking lot. Crime scene tape blocked off all the gas pumps while officers investigated.

The Illinois State Police are handling an ongoing investigation.
