Man shot during attempted carjacking in downtown St. Louis

Two men attempted to take a victim's vehicle, and another victim was shot during a struggle over the car.

ST. LOUIS — A man was shot while taking a break from driving for a rideshare Wednesday night in downtown St. Louis. Police say two men tried to take his acquaintance's car.

Police said the gunshot victim was rushed to the hospital and had "stable" vital signs after an incident between at least five men. In a brief description of the incident, St. Louis Metropolitan police identified the men by their ages.

The gunshot victim is a 32-year-old man. He was taking a break from driving rideshares at about 7:15 p.m. near 7th and Market streets.

He was speaking with two men that he knew, a 27-year-old man and a 29-year-old man.

A car with at least two men pulled alongside the victims. The car was identified as a Hyundai Elantra.

One suspect entered the 27-year-old man's car, and a struggle ensued over the car. The victims heard a gunshot and then ran away.

The suspect fled the scene in their own Elantra.

Police said it was not immediately known if one of the carjacking suspects fired the gunshot.

Anyone with information about the attempted carjacking and shooting was asked to call CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS (8477).
