According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, officers found a man who had been shot at about 3:15 a.m. outside of the common entrance of an apartment building in the 5700 block of South Broadway. The victim, later identified as 36-year-old Terrell Cunningham, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the probable cause statement, Richmond is a property manager at the apartment. Richmond told police he noticed the building had been broken into, so he grabbed his shotgun and went to investigate.

He told police he found the man inside the building kneeling and with his hands up. Richmond told police the man stood up and started walking toward him. Richmond said he shot the man in self-defense, but another witness who was inside the room said Richmond shot the victim immediately.

In the probable cause statement. police said the evidence showed the victim was shot in the side, which would not line up with what Richmond said about the man walking toward him.
