ST CHARLES, Mo. — A St. Charles County man was found dead in his home in a gruesome scene that included blood on the flooring, bedding, and walls of his bedroom and his body partially inside of a dog cage, according to a probable cause statement from the Lake Saint Louis Police Department Thursday.
William T. Roberts, 46, from the country of Cyprus, was arrested during a traffic stop in Illinois while driving the deceased’s vehicle, police said. The wife of the victim told police her husband had gone to the airport to pick up Roberts, who was expected to visit for about a week.
The victim was discovered Wednesday after his wife, who was out of town, said that he was not answering his phone and that neighbors had found the family dog loose in the neighborhood.
Police made a check on the well-being of the deceased and found the patio door open. Once inside they discovered the victim’s body and the horrific scene.
According to the court documents, police found the victim partially inside a dog cage that was covered with a sheet and clothing. There was blood throughout the bedroom and the victim had numerous puncture wounds on his back and shoulder.
Police said a knife handle was found inside of the bedroom but the blade wasn’t located.
Roberts is facing counts of second-degree murder and tampering with a motor vehicle.
Court documents said that the victim’s truck was tracked on surveillance cameras in a number of other locations in Missouri and other states. Illinois State Police arrested him after a traffic stop east of Joliet, Illinois.
Police said Roberts had injuries to his hands that indicated he had been in a struggle.
