ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — A St. Louis County jury on Thursday convicted a 21-year-old man in connection with a deadly gas station shooting in 2020.
Ramon White was convicted of second-degree murder, attempted robbery and two counts of armed criminal action in connection with the deadly shooting of 32-year-old Dwight Henderson at the Petromart Gas Station on Airport Road on July 11, 2020.
According to the probable cause statement, Henderson was at the Petromart gas station at 8601 Airport Road in the early morning when a car occupied by White and others pulled up alongside Henderson's car. White reportedly attempted to steal Henderson's car, when Henderson came outside to confront him.
After a struggle, the statement said, White shot Henderson in the chest. Henderson later died and the entire event was caught on surveillance footage.
The jury was shown the surveillance video and video of his police interview in which White admitted to trying to steal a car the same way shown in the security video. They were also shown White's Facebook page showing he was riding in a car matching the vehicle seen in the security video.
White's defense team argued there was insufficient evidence to convict him beyond a reasonable doubt. White's DNA was not found in Henderson's car and the gun used to kill Henderson was not recovered and presented as evidence, a press release from St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell's Office said.
The jury sided with the prosecution, convicting White on all four counts.
Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 26.
The press release said White was previously charged with murder in 2019 in the city of St. Louis, but those charges were dropped because "key witnesses were not available to testify."
