ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — A St. Louis County police sergeant was charged with stealing Tuesday for allegedly logging 18 hours of holiday pay without working.
David Ryan, 51, was charged with stealing $750 or more and was suspended without pay after an investigation found he was paid $1,716 for hours he logged but did not work.
Ryan was a sergeant for the St. Louis County Police Department at the time of the alleged incidents, the probable cause statement said. His work responsibilities included supervising security officers and police officers at the St. Louis County courthouse and justice center.
Ryan logged a combined 18.2 hours on Thanksgiving and New Year's Day, but an investigation found he did not work on those days, the statement said. Investigators found Ryan was in Branson on Thanksgiving, and was "elsewhere in the St. Louis region" for most of New Year's Day.
St. Louis County Police Department employees earn double pay for work performed on holidays, and Ryan was paid $1,716.26 for the 18.2 holiday hours during which he did not perform his duties. The probable cause statement said the arrangement was not approved by his supervisor.
Detectives with the St. Louis County Police Department's Bureau of Crimes Against Property are handling the investigation. The department said Ryan is currently suspended without pay.
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office issued Ryan a summons in lieu of an arrest.
