St. Louis grandfather furious after grandson robbed of designer tennis shoes

"I'm upset about it all. My grandson could have been shot or killed over some tennis shoes. It's crazy," Calvin Clifton said.

ST. LOUIS — "I'm upset about it all. It makes no sense. Nothing like that has ever happened to him," Calvin Clifton said.

The furious grandfather is still shaking his head after what happened to his 13-year-old grandson.

"If he can't wear what he wants to wear then it's crazy," Clifton said on Friday.

On Monday afternoon, his grandson told St. Louis police he got off his school bus on Greer Avenue and walked towards the intersection of Sullivan and Vandeventer Avenue when 10 teenagers approached him and asked if he wanted to buy some marijuana.

"He said no and they said give it up," Clifton said.

Clifton said one of the teenagers pointed a gun at his grandson's chest while another aimed a gun at the 7th grader's side.

'I'm just so thankful that my grandson was not hurt. (His grandson) said, 'I'm glad I didn't get shot,'" Clifton said.

The young robbers stole his grandson's $700 Balenciaga tennis shoes, designer belt and book bag.

Clifton said his grandson is an only child and loves football. His aunt bought the sneakers for him because he is a good kid.

"He is a smart, typical kid. That's what peeved me the most ... my grandson had no shoes on when he made it home. They robbed him of his shoes and other things at 3 p.m.," Clifton said.

The terrified teen ran for his life.

"He ran, but he said a guy gave him a ride to the corner and he told the guy to let him out because they were following him," he added.

"(The victim) was an innocent kid just trying to walk home," Gregory Purnell,  senior pastor of Whole Dreams Christian International Church, said.

The callous crime happened near the church and he said he had a message for the 13-year-old victim.

"Keep your head up. Keep doing the right thing. Keep going to school," Purnell said.

The boy's mother didn't want to talk on camera. She told 5 On Your Side her son remains traumatized by the incident and will receive counseling.

As of Friday, police have not made any arrests in the armed robbery.
