St. Louis man is awake, out of ICU almost a month after being shot on his wedding night

"They’re going to see how he does this week, and he might be coming home next week," his sister-in-law said.

ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis man shot on his wedding night in late June is now awake. Francisco Gonzalez is out of the intensive care unit after being there for almost a month.

Gonzalez was shot in the head as he was celebrating his wedding on June 28 in a St. Louis backyard. Dulce and Francisco Gonzalez tied the knot after a decade and two children together.

His family told 5 On Your Side he has spoken and started physical therapy, but his memory comes and goes.

"They’re going to see how he does this week and he might be coming home next week," his sister-in-law said.

A GoFundMe campaign was created for the family. It's raised more than $35,000.

In the most recent update on GoFundMe, it said Gonzalez is not yet walking but they have him sitting up in a chair. He can move his legs and feet but not his toes.

It read, "He’s having some trouble remembering his wife and children but does remember other family members. Considering where we were four weeks ago, God gets the glory."

The post said his wife, Dulce, has been by his side every day and wants to be there for every milestone of progress her husband makes.

No arrests have been made in the case.

The updated post said, "As for the investigation, it’s been slow moving but continues … more shootings in the area have happened since."

It added, "St. Louis needs to get these guys off the streets."

The last weekend of June, a wedding ceremony took place in the couple's backyard with about 50 family members. As the night wrapped up after midnight, the bride's sister, Yaribeth Peña, said they were all hanging out when two armed men in ski masks entered the yard and told them not to move.

Police said as one of the men was going through peoples' pockets, the armed man stood behind the groom.

Francisco was shot in the head and the two armed men ran away with nothing.

Family have asked for anyone with information or surveillance footage to come forward.
