ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — A St. Louis man was charged Thursday for nearly striking his father and a St. Louis County police officer with his car while resisting arrest.
According to the St. Louis County Police Department, a neighbor called police to report a burglary at about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of Midlothian Road. The homeowner called while officers were on their way and said it was her daughter's "drunk boyfriend," not a burglary, and that she wanted him to leave.
Officers arrived to find the boyfriend, 31-year-old Tyrone Cherry Jr., and the homeowner arguing in the front yard. Police said officers instructed Cherry to leave, and he responded by cursing at them before walking to his car.
When police told Cherry he couldn't drive because he was intoxicated, Cherry got in the car and drove off at a high speed, headed straight toward his father who happened to be riding a moped in the street. Police said his father had to jump off the moped to avoid being hit.
After running over the moped, Cherry sped down the street and made a U-turn before heading back toward police. That's when officers pulled out their firearms and pointed them toward Cherry, police said. One of the officers had to jump out of the way to avoid being struck by the vehicle.
Despite officers ordering Cherry to stop, he drove away from the scene. Police said they found him minutes later banging on the back door of the home, trying to get inside, and arrested him.
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office charged Cherry on Thursday with two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of armed criminal action and one count of resisting arrest.
As of Friday, Cherry was being held on a $100,000 cash-only bond.
Investigation into the incident was ongoing.
