ST. LOUIS — A 21-year-old St. Louis man pleaded guilty Monday to shooting a boy in the back following an argument over a container of yogurt.
According to the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office, Kajuan Ali Daniels-McMillan got into an argument with his brother over yogurt on Dec. 17, 2021, at their family home in the 4600 block of North 20th Street.
A woman called 911 when the brothers began threatening each other, and Daniels-McMillan stormed out of the home.
As the man was leaving the home, he fired four shots through the door. A 9-year-old who was also home at the time was trying to lock the door when shrapnel from the bullets hit him in the back. He was taken to an area hospital, treated and released.
Daniels-McMillan was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action. He'll face 10 to 30 years in prison for the weapons charge and could potentially receive a sentence of three to 15 years for the armed criminal action.
"The senseless shooting is a reminder of how quickly personal conflicts can escalate when a gun is part of the equation," Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore said in a statement. "I am grateful that our office was able to hold the defendant accountable for irresponsible behavior that harmed an innocent child trying to keep his home secure."
Daniels-McMillan's sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 5.
