ST. LOUIS — An 18-year-old man is in critical condition after he was shot outside of the Urban League of St. Louis' headquarters, the city's police department said.
Officers arrived at the scene near the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Drive and Kingshighway Boulevard at around noon on Monday, the department said. There, they found the victim in the hallway of the organization with a gunshot wound.
Investigators said the shooting happened after a fight broke out between a 39-year-old man and a group, some of which were teenagers. The shooting victim reportedly tried to break up the fight before he was shot by the 39-year-old.
Police have yet to release the identity of the 39-year-old, but said he was taken into custody at the scene.
The 18-year-old was transported to a local hospital. Officers haven't shared any further updates on his condition.
Urban League spokesperson James Clark sent the following statement to 5 On Your Side:
We had limited access to the incident. An altercation happened yesterday between two of our private, independent vendor’s clients that moved into the lobby and one person was shot.
Urban League staff arrived shortly after and de-escalated the conflict. The staff then provided life saving first aid assistance to the victim, until first responders arrived.
