Teen charged as adult in deadly shooting on MetroLink platform in May

The suspect, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, was taken into custody less than a day after the shooting and was being held in a juvenile detention facility.
A woman was shot and killed Saturday afternoon at the Forest Park-DeBaliviere MetroLink station. A 17-year-old was arrested in connection with the killing.

ST. LOUIS — A teenager was charged as an adult on Monday in connection with the deadly shooting of a woman on a MetroLink platform earlier this year.

Karina Whitfield, 18, was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the May 11 shooting death of 19-year-old Jordan Gunn. Whitfield, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, was taken into custody less than a day after the shooting and was being held in a juvenile detention facility.

St. Louis police officers responded to the scene in the 200 block of DeBaliviere Avenue shortly after 3:30 p.m. The woman was not conscious or breathing when they arrived. She was taken by ambulance to Barnes-Jewish Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

"Investigators were able to quickly identify a suspect in this case, aided by the robust surveillance system of Metro and the quick assistance provided by Metro public safety," St. Louis police spokesperson Sgt. Charles Wall said the day of the shooting.

Police said Gunn was shot in the chest. It was unclear what led up to the shooting, which happened steps away from the Missouri History Museum and Forest Park.

According to charging documents, police said security video showed Whitfield entering the MetroLink platform then running from the platform with a gun in her hand.

Whitfield is being held without bond.
