ST. LOUIS — A man found guilty of manslaughter for crashing into a pickup truck in south St. Louis, killing the truck's driver was sentenced to prison Tuesday.
Mahdi Salah Gayar, who was 17 at the time of the incident in December 2017, was driving a 2008 Maserati GranTurismo on Gravois Avenue near Kings Drive between 69 and 82 mph when he hit a Chevrolet Silverado being driven by Daniel Domian.
The speed limit was 30 mph for that section of the road, officials said.
Domain, 62, was turning onto Kings Drive from Gravois Avenue near his home on Rhodes Avenue when he was killed.
“I’m the reason an innocent man lost his life,” Gayar said according to an emailed news release. “I know it’s never going to be enough but I am deeply sorry.”
A state sentencing assessment concluded Gayar had a low risk of committing a similar crime.
Gayar was sentenced to "shock time," 120 days in prison, as part of a four-year sentence. After those 120 days, the Missouri Department of Corrections will assess if Gayar should continue his prison term or start five years of probation.
Domain was remembered as a loving husband. His wife, Pam Domain, told Gayar that she hated him and he had made her life horrible. Domain's relatives spoke in court, describing their ongoing grief.
A wrongful death lawsuit filed against Gayar by Domian's family in 2018 was settled for $325,000.
The MSRP for a base model 2008 Maserati GranTurismo was $113,450, according to Kelley Blue Book.
