Teen fatally shot in Lincoln County, Missouri

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the victim," the county's sheriff said.

TROY, Mo. — A teen is dead after a fatal shooting Sunday in Troy, Missouri.

Police said they responded to a 911 call at about 10:30 a.m. on Dodson Road in Troy, Missouri, for a domestic disturbance. When Lincoln County deputies arrived, they saw an unidentified 16-year-old boy who appeared to be suffering injuries from a gunshot wound.

A family member identified the boy as Matthew Robinson.

"It's tragic obviously," Detective Alyssa Erson with Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said. "We hate to see his life taken from him so soon."

Lincoln County Sheriff's Office is investigating the events leading up to the shooting.

As of now, police aren't certain where the gun came from or who it belonged to. It's believed there were five people inside the home on Dec. 31 when shots were fired.

Police believe all parties involved are accounted for. The parties involved were taken to the sheriff's office and will be interviewed, police said.

"I wouldn't say it's something that is often seen," Erson said when asked about the frequency of domestic disturbances in the Troy area, especially during this time of year. "We get our fair share of domestic disturbances. It's kind of a case-by-case situation. Whether or not it escalates to a situation that we're in right now."

Sheriff Rick Harrell released this statement:

Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the victim. The loss of a young life is a tragedy, and we are committed to a thorough and transparent investigation to fully understand all the events as they happened.

The Sheriff's Office is working with Lincoln Coroner's office to gather more facts in this case.

"Our main focus is really getting to the bottom of exactly what happened," Erson said.

On Tuesday, a spokesperson with the Lincoln County R-III School District confirmed the teen was a student at New Horizons High School and offered the following statement:

The Lincoln County R-III family was heartbroken to learn of the death of a New Horizons High School Student.

We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and all individuals impacted by this tragedy.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) and throughout this week, District crisis counselors will be on-site at New Horizons High School to work with students and staff. Additionally, school counselors are on-site at all of our school locations for any individual who would like to reach out.
