1 dead, 1 critically injured in shooting near Lafayette Square

ST. LOUIS — One person was killed and another was critically injured Thursday afternoon near Lafayette Square.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday to a shooting in the 2600 block of Rutger Street. 

A 26-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were taken to an area hospital with bullet-related injuries. The man was later pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. Police said the woman was in critical condition at the hospital.

The Homicide Division assumed the ongoing investigation.

As of Friday morning, police had not shared the man's identity, what led up to the shooting or whether any arrests had been made.

The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis has the Neighborhood Healing Network, which serves people who have experienced crime, violence or been the victim of an incident that caused trauma.

The Bullet Related Injury Clinic (BRIC) is a community-based clinic in St. Louis that helps people heal after they have been injured by a bullet. The BRIC was established to help people who are discharged from the emergency department after being shot.
