ST CHARLES, Mo. — St. Charles police have rolled out a new crime mapping tool so residents can see what’s going on in their neighborhood in real time.
It’s called “Out Your Window.” It allows residents to check out crime statistics down to the block they live on. Whenever residents hear something is going on, they can look at the crime map.
“It will appear on the crime map and people can look it up and find out what’s going on in their city. It’s real-time information,” said St. Charles Police Chief Randall McKinley.
He said the department rolled out the updates and tools after hiring a new crime analyst, who compiled information to make it easier for anyone to access.
He said the “Out Your Window” tool not only allows anyone to see what’s happening as it happens, but people also can check out historical data going back five years.
“You can really get a feel for what’s going on in St. Charles,” Chief McKinley added.
The police department also is asking residents and business owners to let them know if you have a doorbell camera or security camera. They’re working to put together a registry of sorts in each neighborhood.
“Now, that doesn't give us access to your cameras. What it does is registers them, so we can know, ‘Hey, on this street, in this block, there are several security systems that we can call these people and say can you check and see if there’s anything that would be of assistance to us,” Chief McKinley said.
He added that the security cameras help the police department crack a lot of cases that would otherwise go unsolved.
