ST. LOUIS — An 18-year-old and 16-year-old are in custody after a carjacking led to a pursuit in north St. Louis on Thursday.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office on Friday charged 18-year-old Enrique Muhammad with first-degree tampering and resisting arrest. Additional charges are under review by prosecutors and may be added later, St. Louis police said.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, Muhammad and the 16-year-old carjacked a victim of their black Toyota Highlander shortly before 8:30 a.m. in the area of North Newstead and Natural Bridge avenues.

After a description of the vehicle was dispatched, an officer observed the victim's vehicle entering the parking lot of the BP gas station at 3250 Natural Bridge Avenue, according to court documents.

The pair got out of the car but immediately got back in and drove away after seeing the officer's marked patrol vehicle. The officer then initiated a pursuit as the stolen car sped eastbound in the westbound lanes, weaved recklessly through traffic and violated stop signs, documents said.

The pursuit continued onto Interstate 70 and ended near Adelaide Avenue when the car's rear driver's side tire became deflated.

Muhammad was driving and the 16-year-old boy was a passenger. Both were taken into custody after a foot pursuit.

The victim responded to the scene and identified the suspects, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
