Uber driver shot during attempted robbery crashes into Ferguson home, police say

The driver was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

FERGUSON, Mo. — An Uber driver crashed into a Ferguson home Tuesday night after he was shot in the hand during an apparent attempted robbery, police said.

Ferguson police Chief Troy Doyle said the incident happened on Forestwood Drive, a residential street near the city's border with Dellwood.

According to a preliminary investigation, the Uber driver was shot in his hand when a man and woman tried to rob him. In reaction, he inadvertently hit his car's accelerator and crashed into a nearby home. No one inside the home was injured.

The driver was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Doyle said the pair that tried to rob the man ran from the scene and were last seen on the 200 block of Forestwood Drive.

The situation is leaving Joyce Glass and her husband to pick up the pieces.

"[I'm] thanking the Lord, every minute that we're ok. It's crazy but we're safe," Glass said.

Tuesday night, Joyce Glass says her family experienced something out of a movie. At around 9:30 p.m., she heard a gunshot and rumbling soon after.

"As the seconds went on, it got closer and louder and louder and that's when we realized and I felt the house shake, we realized somebody just hit our house," Glass said.

The crash turned her living room upside down and resulted in cracks in her ceilings.

Glass and her husband rushed to action - and learned an Uber driver crashed into their home after people tried to rob him.

"You could tell he was nervous [the Uber driver] and didn't know what to do. My husband directed him to take a seat outside and we called 911," Glass said.

Glass' husband told 5 On Your Side when he went outside he saw the suspects before they ran off.

Captain Tim Harris with Ferguson's Police Department said, if caught, the suspects could face multiple charges.

"Robbery in the 1st degree, armed criminal action, assault in the 1st degree, and property damage to the homeowner because it was serious damage to the home," Captain Harris said.

When it comes to what's next for the Glass family, they say there's only one option.

"Pick up and keep it moving, that's all. We just have to know that there's nowhere but up from here," Glass said.

Police were canvassing the area for the pair Tuesday night. No further information on the incident was immediately available.
