WASHINGTON COUNTY, Mo. — A man was fatally shot by Washington County deputies in Richwoods Tuesday night after he pinned a deputy between two vehicles, the sheriff's office said.

Washington County Sheriff Zach Jacobsen identified the man as 36-year-old David M. Peter.

Jacobsen said in a release that deputies responded to Roy's Convenience Store at about 10:45 p.m. to investigate a trespassing complaint. A store employee confirmed Peter was parked in a pickup truck and was trespassing on the store's property.

Deputies spoke to Peter, who gave them a false name, Jacobsen said.

The employee said he wanted Peter removed from the property. A deputy opened the driver's side door and asked him to leave, but Peter refused, started the truck and tried to drive off.

Jacobsen said the deputy tried to put the truck back in park but wasn't able to. That's when Peter accelerated forward with the deputy partially inside, and struck another deputy's patrol vehicle, pinning the deputy between the cars.

The deputies fired their guns and struck Peter, who then crashed into a second deputy's vehicle.

Peter was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputy who was pinned was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is handling a use of force investigation.

Jacobsen said once state police and the Washington County Coroner's Office complete their investigations, they will be sent to the Washington County Prosecuting Attorney's Office for review.
