Woman, child shot in East St. Louis, suspect in custody

Police said a suspect fled the scene but was taken into custody after a K-9 search.

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — A person is in custody after a woman and child were shot in East St. Louis, Illinois, Monday morning. 

The shooting happened at around 5 a.m. Monday in the 1100 block of North 13th Street in East St. Louis. 

According to Illinois State Police, a 21-year-old woman was shot multiple times and a 5-year-old girl suffered a graze wound to the head. Police said their injuries were serious but non-life threatening. 

Police said a suspect fled the scene but was taken into custody after a K-9 search. The suspect's identity has not been released.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information was released regarding the incident.
